How a grassroots charity can contribute to UN Sustainable Development Goals
Lake Aid Chair Felicity Fallon recently gave a TedX Talk about charities and sustainable development.
In the 10-minute interview, Felicity explains how Lake Aid grew from a Facebook group sending clothes to refugee camps in Austria, into a registered charity helping asylum-seeking children in Annecy.
The talk discusses how Lake Aid works towards three of the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals – Quality Education, Reduced Inequalities and Partnerships for the Goals.
Felicity highlights the story of a Kosovan teenager who arrived in Annecy as an asylum-seeker, not speaking any French. Lake Aid volunteers befriended the young girl at a Homework Club they were running in a local winter shelter. Four years later, the girl found Felicity again on social media, as she wanted to thank Lake Aid for the help she and her family had received when they first arrived in France. Having finished her studies, and now legally settled in France, she was thinking about setting up her own cleaning business. Lake Aid was delighted to be able to help again, this time offering business mentoring.
In the talk, Felicity emphasises how we can all contribute to sustainable development goals, by helping out in our local communities with grassroots charities like Lake Aid. What may seem like small contributions can nonetheless have big impacts on peoples lives, and contribute to a more sustainable world for us all. Lake Aid would like to thank Darcy Roehling and TedX Archivorum for organising this event.
