On Saturday 24 March, Lake Aid and New Generation ski school in Courchevel organised a day in the snow for 44 children from families in precarious living situations in France. The children, aged between 7 and 17 years old, sampled skiing and more.
Helen from Lake Aid worked with volunteers and other associations to arrange waterproof jackets and ski pants, hats, gloves and snow boots for each child before the day, plus a bus and volunteers to accompany the kids. Helen said: “It was great that so many different organisations came together to make the day possible, including New Generation, Croix Rouge, Secours Populaire, La Recyclerie d’Alex and of course our own Lake Aid volunteers.”
In La Praz, Millie from New Generation organised three morning activities: cross-country skiing, snow-shoeing and sledging, with sunglasses and extra clothes available to the children who needed them. She also arranged lunch in Bozel, followed by a range of sports and activities including indoor rock climbing, outdoor abseiling, ball games, face painting, colouring and bracelet making. Some 25 volunteers helped the children throughout the day. Millie said: “I think all the adults enjoyed it as much as the children! Some slightly hairy moments involving sledges and skis but hopefully a day to remember for everyone involved.”
The weather was perfect and the only disappointment for the children was that the day had to end.
