Lake Aid volunteers organise February holiday fun for children in need

Thank you everyone who made time these holidays to bring a bit of sunshine to local children in need! Here is a glimpse of what they got up to.

Wednesday 17th February

Sun, snow and smiles in La Croix Fry!

The smiles on the children’s faces said it all and we had to drag them off the piste at the end of the day. Most of the asylum-seeking children were tobogganing for the first time and looked a bit apprehensive to begin with, but they loved it after a few runs!

Thank you to our team of volunteers who sourced and sorted kit, booked helmets, gave lifts to and from a homeless shelter, made picnics, brought drinks, gave money for snacks, sorted parking, lent sledges and parets, and provided smiley faces throughout the day. Thank you also to Croix Rouge for helping organise the kids, and Secours Populaire for storing our ski kit. A refaire!

Thursday 18th February

Lake Aid continued its holiday activities for local children in need.

One volunteer had a pizza party and art workshop at her place for 5 teenage girls from Armenia, Ukraine and Venezuela, while another took 4 aslyum-seeking children and their mum for a trip up the mountain to play in the snow.

Thank you to those who provided lifts, pizza ingredients, art materials and clothes/toiletries for the girls – they loved them!

Meanwhile Suzanne took some children for a picnic at the very quiet end of vallee du Bouchet before the boys went for a walk while the little girls had good fun playing in the igloos and sledging.
They finished the day off with quiet drawing time.

Friday 19th February

While Suzanne took the kids out sledging in the Bauges…

… another Lake Aid volunteer took three asylum-seeking girls on a day out in Annecy:

We had a nice day with sunshine, a lot of talking, gaufres and hot chocolate. The day ended with putting nail varnish on their hands. A nice day just between girls!

Saturday 20th February

Lake Aid took five young people for a day out snow shoeing! The sun shone and the views were beautiful. We all had a great day. Thank you to Grant Fulton, our fantastic guide who donated his time as well as all the other volunteers.

Tutoring

We end this by thanking everyone who volunteered to help with tutoring. Well done Nerys Law for organising this project that is so important for helping these young people integrate and feel supported in a new country. During the February holiday, Lake Aid matched five volunteers with nine young people. We are continuing to work on this project, so watch this space!
