Toussaint arrived in France at the age of 16 as an orphan, fleeing death threats in his home country, the Democratic Republic of Congo. Here is his story and how a local French charity helped him rebuild his life in France.
Why did you come to Annecy, France?
My name is Toussaint and I was born on December 11, 2002 in the Democratic Republic of Congo, in the city of Lubumbashi. I arrived in France, in Annecy, in November 2019, to join an acquaintance of my family and to present myself to the French State as an unaccompanied minor, in order to receive child protection.
I lost both my parents because of the political situation: my father was a journalist and denounced crimes and injustices in our country. Unfortunately, he was killed for this, as was my mother. I was next on the list, and I had no choice but to flee to seek protection elsewhere.
How has Lake Aid helped you?
Lake Aid has helped me enormously. Thanks to a very special person I call “Mama Suzanne”, whom I met in 2020 at Secours Catholique in Annecy. She introduced me to Lake Aid, where I was able to meet other members of this association.
My life has found smiles, joy and hope for the future. Lake Aid has given me great educational, academic, financial and moral support, and has provided many unforgettable activities, such as skiing, holidays, mountain walks, gifts for each birthday.
What is your job now?
I obtained a professional baccalaureate in connected environment systems. I am an electrician and network fitter, and I work in the construction sector.
What do you like most and least about your life now?
What I love most about my life now is the peace, joy, and tranquility that God has given me, as well as the humanity I feel for others. As for what I like least, well I don’t like to have problems in my life!
And a last word?
I wanted to take a moment to express my deep gratitude to you, the volunteers of Lake Aid. Your support and help has been incredibly valuable to me. Whether it was through your time, your effort or simply your presence, you have made a real difference in my life.
With all my gratitude,
Toussaint M.
